About

The SL16 (or Sirena SL16) is a high-performance 4.8-metre (16 foot) fibreglass sailing catamaran specifically designed for youth racing and training, with twin trapezes, an asymmetric spinnaker and skegs (not dagger boards).

Although there are not many of them in the UK the boat is very popular with sailing schools in France because it is a good balance between stability for beginners and performance for more advanced sailors looking for a more technical challenge.

Launched in 2003, it was designed by Olympic sailor Yves Loday and quickly became a global standard for young multihull sailors.

The boat is built using a sandwich polyester construction, making it both lightweight and durable for competitive use.

History and Racing Status

  • Design Origin: It is based on the older KL 15.5 design but features a significantly larger and more modern rig for increased speed.
  • ISAF/World Sailing Status: In 2005, the SL16 was selected by the International Sailing Federation (now World Sailing) as the official multihull for the Youth Sailing World Championships, a role it held for several years.
  • Manufacturers: It is primarily produced by Sirena Voile in France. In the UK, it has been built by White Formula

Sailing Characteristics

  • Performance: Known for being fast and exciting, the SL16 is designed to be sailed on one hull to maximize speed.
  • Handling: While described as "fun," it is also noted as being physically demanding and requiring high levels of focus and coordination between the helm and crew.
  • Target Audience: While excellent for elite youth racing, it is also frequently used by sailing clubs for advanced catamaran instruction.
